The two V's in our range

Over the years we have promoted the virtues of camera based auto calibration technology from VIOSO and now we have added the VNS GeoBox system to our range.
Why?

VIOSO is a great brand and we love the company. They are one of the most suppprtive teams I have ever come across. The company has grown in leaps and bounds from a very humble beginning 11 years ago.

For the rental, staging and performance industry VIOSO technology offers great benefits in form of time saving, in particular when it comes to complex mapping and warping.
(Have you ever tried to calibrate a Dome or curved screen with different radius and had to get your neck cramps massaged away afterwards?).

For smaller installations, where blending and warping is required, VIOSO would be of great benefit, in particular if non-technical staff is involved running the show, except that there is sometimes a certain reluctance to have a 'computer in the system' and maybe the higher cost.

So while VIOSO is a great solution, we needed an alternative. Enter VNS.

In fact VNS is better known as GeoBox. It comes from a small, but very dedicated and dynamic company in Taiwan. I have known Steve Wand, the CEO, for many years and visited his company.
VNS offers a different approach to blending and warping. The system consists of dedicated 'boxes' which offer high resolution input and output, up to 4K/60 fps and features such as blending, warping, Pip, POP and mage rotation, etc..
However, once the system is set-up, it can be left untouched. No Windows PC to start, no unwanted software can be installed and the operation is set-up for years of unattended use, except maybe for re-alignment of projectors. But that is a subject of another article.
Ah, I forgot. GeoBox is also great for Videowall operation, since all the essential features can be used with projectors, LCD's and even LED's.

So the two V's are on opposite end of the scale and they complement each other and do not compete.

We have both here, so if you want to see them, just give us a call or drop us an e-mail.

Wallpaper is dead - introduce the living wallpaper

Studies have revealed that a pleasant working environment and a well decorated meeting room have a positive effect on employee well being and working attitude plus a positive effect on business meetings and negotiations.

Actually I thought that this was just common logic.

While the final handshake over a business deal may be made over lunch or dinner or even on the golf course, it is no doubt that a good atmosphere will influence the mind of those participants who have to turn the deal into reality and to ensure that work is done correctly and in harmony.
Yes, all sorts of approaches have been tried. Yes, some have proven to be successful, but the majority of offices, meeting rooms and reception areas in corporations look dull and cramped and uninspiring.

Here is the conflict. On one hand we have all the modern communication technology on hand which should make work more efficient and effective. Visitors and business partners are dazzled by the high-tech around, but once one lifts the gaze from the screen, everything else is uninspiring.
On the other hand workspaces are expensive and we do not want to waste valuable real estate.

So what to do?

Often lots of money is spend on lavish artworks or fancy furnishings. But these are static and become commonplace after some time. Plus one style does not suit everyone.

But lets imagine there would be a living wall paper which displays images, colours or pattern reflecting the mood of the season, the time of day, the business performance and make people relax from looking at computerscreens so that they can refresh in a short while without having to leave the desk.
Wallpapers like this could build the team stronger by allowing individuals to contribute to the display and it can make visitors and customers relax and more receptive in negotiations. At the same time, such wallpaper can be used to display important information, training videos and performance data.

These type of displays are often set-up in airline lounges and public spaces, enticing and relaxing travelers.

The 'electronic wall paper' seems the way to go, but it is new and may not be for everyone’s budget at this stage and the brightness and colour intensity may not always be suitable.
Similar  problems can occur with direct view LED and LCD displays. Plus the latter ones require space, which can make a room appear smaller.

Though we will not dismiss LED entirely in this discussion, since this technology can be used to create nice dividers between desks, in particular the use of transparent LED, or group of desks and offer illumination and imaging at the same time.

But what can we do with large wall spaces?

Modern projection technology is the solution. Short and Ultrashort throw projectors can be mounted under the ceiling or into sideboards, projecting large images at short distances. Modern projection surfaces allow projection under normal room lighting and still provide bright and brillant images.

Modern blending solutions let create large scenes and matrix switcher allows image data to be routed to particular projectors for selective information. All this can be conveniently tied into the corporate network or alternatively operated in stand alone configuration.

These systems can be extended as required and routing data to additional  LCD or LED devices is no problem.

Even interactivity is possible through systems, like the Radartouch.

Opponents may argue that systems like this are expensive and maintenance intensive. But modern Laser projectors are virtually maintenance free. Since the systems have short wake up times, they can be left 'off' if not in use. The lightsource may last up to 20000 hours and a refreshed
and motivated workforce may quickly offset the initial investment.

Image blending for panoramas is possible using hardware or software based systems and modern auto calibration systems guarantee proper image alignment without technician involvement. This also allows the use of smaller and cheaper projectors and provide flexibility.

All this can be achieved by clever co-operation between the IT section, AV specialists, content creators, manufacturers and even human resources, all under the co-ordination of the AV consultant.

One year on

Time really flies and even more so, once you get older. But there is some scientific explanation behind all of this and it has somehow to do with changes in the core temperature of the human body, I think.

But it also seems that demands on our time increase and thus we just don't seem to have enough.

One year on, we received a mail indicating a change in our distribution line up.
Not something once wants to hear at the beginning of a new year.
It resulted in a turbulent year, feelings similar of being thrown out of a familiy. Maybe similar of how one felt, when moving out from home and had to fend for oneself.
Of course one makes mistakes, takes wrong turns and end up in acrynomious exchanges. but it sharpens perception and the requirement of survival makes one to look for new opportunities and solutions.
These solutions are evolving, starting with the launch of our own, new product, allowing us to build on the foundation already laid. But 2019 will see us to move into a wider field of activities....stay tuned.

One Year on, almost, I received a Cochlear Implant after having lost hearing in one ear to a virus infection. It was an interesting experience. Not quiet achieving what we expected, since some of the hearing nerve end seem to be damaged beyond recovery, but on the other hand, I would miss the device if it was not there (something my surgeon predicted).
So if you have hearing issues and a Cochlear implant can help, do it. In Australia it is deemed to be a prosthesis and covered largely by health insurance (pls. check wit your own fund). I paid less the $1,000 for a $30,000 operation and technology.
And, what I was fearing did not come true, nobody ever made a comment about the cable, which apparently comes out from under my hair and leads to the hearing device...a great relieve.

One year on.....sure you have your own stories to tell. So enjoy life  and make the best out of it.

The perfect Croissant

On a cold February first I entered Toulouse main railways station for a daylong TGV trip. A trip that should provide more surprises and be rather longer then expected, but that at another time.

Having grown up in Germany and lived in Australia for a large part of my life, with extensive travel to Asia, Japan and South America, I have always regarded a Croissant as a lovely, flaky accompiament to a good cup of coffee in the morning, but could never see the same enthusiasm in it, as described in so many articles and books, the French do.

In fact I just had the Australian variety and, while nice, it just did not have the same appeal.

But at this frosty morning the wafting aroma of a patisserie stuck my nose and seeing all the beautiful, brownish, sometimes sugary concoctions of various creations from the bakers hands, I could not resist. I bought some Croissants.

I could not wait, I ripped open the paper bag, took out one of these flaky, buttery shapes, bit into it and....I could have died here and then. A flavour exploded in my mouth. Beneath the crust, of which small bits fell in small flakes to the tiled floor, was a flavour filled interior I never had expected from a simple croissant.

This was heaven and it did not take long until the second one went where the first one did.

Now I understand the fascination the French have with their creation and how.... this one delicious bite can make not only your day, but have your mouth watering after if for weeks to come.
